Newborn Starter Checklist and Gift Collection with Made in USA + Product Selections
Expecting a newborn is exciting and stressful. Along with all of the more prosaic hopes and worries, there’s a lot of practical things to get lined up, like ensuring you have all the right equipment and supplies on hand.
For most people, the notion of bringing a new one into the world also leads to reflection on how you can help this world you’re bringing her or him into be a better place. It’s a natural time to go greener and more socially conscious in your purchasing and, particularly if its your first newborn, there’s a lot of purchasing to do! That means lots of consumer shopping impacts and an ability to really move the needle by making socially conscious choices.
With this collection, our goal is to help you in two ways:
- Give you a definitive checklist of the things you need for your infant.
- Give you at least one choice for each item on the checklist that you can feel good about buying.
While there are many ways to elect products you can feel good about buying, we’ve taken the simple approach of creating a collection of products made in places that have high SweetScores for protection of the environment and protection of fundamental human rights. Purchasing products in the collection will support and reward those places. You’ll also be supporting jobs in the U.S. and in countries that buy about as much or more from the U.S. as the U.S. buys from them.
Needless to say, with so many companies, including companies headquartered in the US, choosing to do their manufacturing in China, it took us quite a bit of research to put this list together for you.
We hope you’ll use it and feel good knowing, every time you interact with your loved one and the product, that your purchase helped move things at least a bit in the right direction.
By the way, if you have suggestions for products we should include in this collection, we’d love to hear from you. Please submit products to us here.
Most parents choose disposable diapers, and most of the major commercial disposable diaper brands sold in the U.S. are made in the U.S. So with place of manufacture being the criteria, each of the following are good choices:
- Seventh Generation size 0 diapers from Vermont-based Seventh Generation
- Huggies Size N diapers from Texas-based Kimberly-Clark
- Pampers Swaddlers Size N diapers from Ohio-based Proctor and Gamble
With regards to cloth diapers, here are our three good options which our research shows are made in the following places:
Really hard to clean up your newborn when you change her diapers without disposable wipes. Yes, we’d all feel better if there was a washable or fully compostable version available, but if there is, our research didn’t reveal it.
So what we have are the wipes offering from each of the main three diaper makers referenced above.

Formula or breast milk? It is most certainly up to you, and there are positives and negatives to both. If you decide to not go the formula way, make sure you get the right number of bottles and a clean sterilizing instrument.
Contrarily to other components in this starting kit, formula is actually heavily regulated by law and so organic and eco-friendly is an improvement but only slight. Big differences involve no “man-made” DHA ARA” which are in breast-milk but not the healthiest when man-made.
- Dr. Brown’s original bottle newborn feeding set
- Baby’s Only formula
- Bright Beginnings ORGANIC formula made in Vermont (Unavailable currently through our site)
